Bosnia and Herzegovina is becoming one of the easiest ways into Europe for Pakistani workers. After years of local people moving to Western Europe, there are real gaps in the workforce, and in 2026 the government raised its foreign-worker quota and made hiring simpler. For skilled and semi-skilled Pakistani workers, this creates real opportunities.

This article explains the jobs, the pay and the process. For the permit steps in detail, read our Bosnia work permit guide, and see how we deploy workers on our Bosnia page.

Why Bosnia is short of workers

Because so many Bosnians have gone abroad to work, employers in several industries cannot find enough local staff. Analysts warn the country could be about 100,000 workers short within a few years. In response, Bosnia set a quota of roughly 7,400 foreign work permits for 2026, and in March 2026 the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina approved changes to make it easier to hire foreigners where local staff cannot be found. The door is opening wider, not closing.

Which sectors are recruiting?

  • Construction — one of the biggest sources of demand: masons, steel fixers, carpenters and site workers.
  • Manufacturing & metalwork — factory operators, welders and fabricators.
  • Wood processing — a traditional Bosnian export industry that keeps needing workers.
  • Hospitality — hotel, kitchen and service staff, especially in Sarajevo and tourist areas.
  • Agriculture, transport & logistics — seasonal and year-round jobs, including drivers.

How much could you earn?

Wages in Bosnia are lower than in Western Europe, but living costs are also much lower, so workers can save. Pay depends on the sector, the city and experience, and employers tell us their budget so we can match trade-tested workers to it. The legal minimum wage is set by local regulation from January 2026, and skilled and experienced workers earn more.

The Bosnian work permit, explained

Who applies: Your Bosnian employer sponsors the permit.

Quota: Permits are issued within a yearly government quota (about 7,400 for 2026).

Validity: A temporary work permit for up to 1 year, which can be renewed.

Salary rule: Pay must be similar to that of a local worker doing the same job.

Documents: Translated into Bosnian, Croatian or Serbian and apostilled.

Processing: From several weeks to a few months, depending on the canton.

As in most of Europe, the employer goes first: it must show the job cannot be filled locally and then sponsor your work permit, after which you apply for temporary residence based on that job. Your residence depends on the job, so it matters to work with a reliable employer found through a licensed agency.

Reasons to consider Bosnia

  • Less competition than the big Gulf and Western European routes — and growing demand.
  • A first step into Europe — Bosnia is an EU candidate country and is slowly bringing its rules in line with the EU.
  • Low living costs — so you can save or send home more of your salary.

How to avoid scams
